Omschrijving

The 1700cm2 wing foil system with 82cm mast and 82cm fuselage, has been pre-selected for the rider who wants a ready to go ‘bagged’ solution. For learning up to the upper ends of intermediate riding, the 1700cm2 provides ease of lift, superb top end speed and manoeuvrability with the shorter fuselage. Mistral’s ‘First Flight’ Sabre Foils have been developed using a bottom-up first principles engineering approach meaning that we have been able to focus on the critical design elements which make up a hydrofoil wing to optimise performance in every aspect.

Effortless flight is the goal of any first flight experience where energy expenditure needs to be minimised for maximum return on air time. This was a key element to our design goals. Once up on the foil the next quality consideration was flight stability in making the experience smooth without nasty pitch control issues resulting in frequent landings and take-offs; high pitch stability is therefore a key feature. While a first flight experience warrants ease of take off and high pitch stability it was our goal to create foils that would perform beyond the first flight experience into the realms of levels of speed and performance sought by advanced riders. In this respect unlock-able potential means our Sabre can exceed the performance needs of first flight riders.

SPECIFICATIONS and FEATURES

  • 1700sq cm foil recommended for Wing and SUP Foiling
  • 320sq cm rear foil
  • 12k Carbon front and rear foils
  • Extruded aluminium mast

MAINTENANCE

  • Use Tef Gel on bolts
  • Rinse with fresh water after use
  • Seal voids within mast head with silicon if required

ADVISORY: Please remove RUBBER GROMMETS fitted into Mast end which connects to Fuselage. Removing will prevent M6 Bolts working loose and create maximum security of fit. While a small amount of water will enter the mast (normal) use silicon to seal the void to make water tight.

MAST SECTIONS: Constructed from extruded aluminium, our masts underwent rigorous testing both on water and under computer analysis in order to ensure a holistic match with our foil and fuselage sections, together with rider expectations.

PRECISION MADE FUSELAGE SECTIONS: Milled from billeted aluminium direct from our 3D files using CNC technology, our fuselages are precision designed and powder coated for a professional finish. Above all, a one piece aluminium fuselage offers greater torsional strength and less flex than a carbon equivalent.

STRENGTH vs WEIGHT: Weight versus strength is an eternal quest and in this instance as waterman and women, we know all too well the hard knocks first experience equipment can take. Above all we wanted a robust product. In addition added weight assists with pitch control.

FRONT AEROFOIL SECTIONS 20% SUPERIOR: Starting with a theoretical performance analysis of 50+ existing aerofoils, we obtained  specific design parameters influencing performance at speeds associated with wing foiling (8-16 knots). Our analysis led us to design the lowest possible drag at take-off without compromising in-flight performance. The result; we have an aerofoil section which has up to a 20% drag deduction when compared to existing OEM products in our design speed range.

COMPRESSION CARBON MOULDING: Using 12K carbon twill offers us the best possible uniformity of torsional strength and durability for our foils. Layers of carbon are laid up inside a two part heated mould and a CNC’d foam inner core forms the nucleus. Extreme pressure compressed the two halves together to create an impressively strong end product

SHAPE AND ASPECT RATIO: Two elements of wing design have the biggest influence on the amount of induced drag created; wing shape and aspect ratio. The theoretical optimum hydrofoil wing shape, is a semi-ellipse a natural starting point for our design, with small tweaks we’ve prevented premature stalls while ensuring the tips were sufficiently blunt from a safety perspective.

WHY FOIL ASPECT RATIO IS IMPORTANT: Foil aspect ratio is defined as the wing span2 / wing area. It’s a tricky criteria to optimise between low drag, stall angle and manoeuvrability. The higher the aspect ratio of a wing, the lower the induced drag and the higher the aspect ratio of the foil but with longer wing spans, manoeuvrability is compromised. A higher aspect ratio wing has a tendency to stall easily, making it less practical for beginner and intermediate riders.

WING ANHEDRAL AND TIP SWEEP: We have designed the wing with a shallow anhedral curve with curved down tips. Anhedral (downwards angling of a wing) helps increase manoeuvrability of a wing, by reducing roll stability. The sweep down tips help the foil track in a straight line when the foil is horizontally level and provides side force to prevent slippage during a manoeuvre.

REAR FOIL STABILISER: When designing the rear stabiliser foil, we followed a similar process as the front keeping our three key performance criteria the same; Ease of take-off, high pitch stability and “unlock-able” performance for expert users.

REAR AEROFOIL SECTION 28% LESS DRAG: The section profile of a rear stabiliser is quite different to that of the forward because the function they perform is very different. As the name stabiliser suggests, they provide stability to the system, rather than hydrodynamic lift, like the forward wing. Our analysis allowed us to focus our design to have the lowest possible drag at take-off, while not compromising in-flight performance. The result; we have an aerofoil section with up to a 28% drag deduction when compared to existing OEM products in our design speed range.

SHIM ANGLES: The main benefit of this wide operating range (drag bucket) is that as you progress, you can decrease the shim angle and still have the wing operating within its lowest drag range, providing you with greater speed and looser handling. Shims are provided from -1 – +3 degrees.
